Internal struggle

I’ve fought myself for all these years,

Long before the taunts and sneers.

The world threw stones, they left their mark,

But I’d been bleeding in the dark.

They saw my skin before my face,

As if my worth was tied to race.

They saw the woman that I choose,

And acted like I had to lose.

They saw the skin that hangs on me,

The parts I hide, they seem to see.

The mirror’s war I’ve always known,

A fight I’ve faced and fought alone.

They saw a mind that never sleeps,

A heart that runs, a brain that leaps.

They called me “too much,” loud and strange,

As if I simply had to change.

No one judged me more than me,

No one saw what I could see.

The harshest words I’ve ever heard

Were all my own, in every word.

So if you think you’ve made me break,

Or found the fault that I can’t shake,

Just know the battle isn’t new…

I’ve spent my whole life fighting myself not just people like you.
