It’s never just one lie, then simply it’s gone,
It lingers in places where trust once belonged.
It burrows down deeper, it feeds on the doubt,
Until even the truth feels impossible to work out.
A lie doesn’t end when the truth comes to light,
It changes the questions you ask every night.
It makes you look backwards and question the past,
Wondering which bits were real, which were masks.
It’s not what was hidden that tears me in two,
It’s knowing how easily lies sounded true.
How eyes never faltered, how words never shook,
How truth could be twisted with barely a look.
And once that is broken, what happens from there?
When promises sound like just words in the air?
When “trust me” means nothing I trusted before,
And every new answer just opens that door.
That’s how lies eat you they don’t need to shout,
They quietly settle and hollow you out.
They turn reassurance to something you fear,
Because truth and deception can sound just as sincere.
I don’t fear the answers, however they sting,
I fear never knowing the truth of a thing.
Because pain can be faced, and wounds disappear,
But doubt has a way of surviving for years.
So tell me the ugly. Let honesty burn.
Give me the truth with no place left to turn.
I’d rather be shattered by all that is true
Than peacefully held by a lie told by you.
Because truth might destroy me, might bring me to tears,
But lies make me question the love of us.
They reach into memories I once held so tight
And stain even moments I know felt right.
And that is the cruelty I cannot undo
You didn’t just make me stop trusting in you.
You made me look back at the life that we knew
And wonder how much of it ever was true.
So now even honesty comes with a cost,
Because something much bigger than truth has been lost.
The worst part of lying isn’t finding out why
It’s finally hearing the truth…
and still wondering
if it’s another lie.
